Hello Flocks!!!
My name is Jack and I’m here to share with you my experience related with job market here in Canada.
I’ve been living here with my wife and our three kids for almost 2 year ,in Mississauga and I can say that it is not easy to find a secure job nowadays due to recession. In our country my wife used to work in pharmaceutical field and me in processing meat industry, both of us having a bachelor degree .Here the things are different and we decided that she remain home looking after kids and me to look for a decent job so we can have a quiet life. I start to send my resumes to every factory I knew ,looking in yellow pages or on internet and I was very disappointed that I didn’t received any answer. Somebody told me about “cold calling” and here is the idea I want to discuss with you flocks. Do you guys actually do this?
I doubted it works any less well than random resume sending and finally I admitted I was right.
What I did was called the employer and asked to speak to HR. I was put on the phone with an HR person, I sad something to effect of, "Hello, My Name is So And So ,I am calling to inquire about the position X or Y you have advertised in/on this or that newspaper or website or if you have any internships or positions available at the present." I always been friendly when I was asking .What is it very important here is learning to accept the answer they give and turn it into something positive. They may say, "You can look at our website." Now's your chance. "Would you happen to have your website address." or "Would you mind if I mailed my resume to you." Anyway I sympathize with them and also tried to get on their good side. Always I got their name before the ending of our conversation and then I send again resume by resume with the HR’s name I gathered believing this is a step in front of the others. Finally I was wrong.
One raining day ,full of frustration and desperate I get myself in the car and I take a ride along with my resumes to check directly to the companies which were closed to my area .I was almost crying when I entered the building of a middle company with my cell phone ready to speak to an HR and right in that moment I saw that girl ,my first love from the high school .She has been working for this company since 2003.I could not to defined the mixture of different sort of feeling which flooded suddenly inside me. I saw in her eyes the light from the end of the tunnel and I was wondering if she remember me and she is able and wants to give me a hand .One second she was staring at me like she was trying to remember something and in the next moment I saw her smiling and ready to embrace me .I was touched ,moved …actually my ass was moved two weeks later in the HR’s office for the interview. During those two weeks we both kept in touch and she gave me a lot of information which turned out to be very helpful for me .As someone mentioned later, and gave that example with the flee and mosquito in the park ,it is not a good thing to tell the interviewer that you are able to do many things but one you are the best to. I was documented myself about all the aspects regarding the company and I didn’t miss the chance to mention this to show them that I care about and I ‘m the person that suit the best for this position. Forget to tell yak, flocks that I was applying for a quality assurance job Finally I got that job and couple of months I was very happy with this job but I didn’t know the nightmare will get over me soon .This is another story ,what trouble I got …will be my next story.
I look forward to hear yours now

Again, as I said in previous thread, resume is the word used in North America for a description of your job experience.
If you will read a book about resumes it will look to you like all of them are the same, but in reality there are huge differences between US and Canada, between recession and economic boom, between different companies.
And I will give you a few examples, the resume in US will have to show what experience you have, the jobs you went thru, the things you have done - I mean the real thing.
In Canada, a resume it has to be a sum o lies (and even the HR guys and managers are starting from this idea, you have lied in your resume and exaggerate the things), as I said before, if you don't like to say lies your place is not in Canada. First of all even if you had ups and downs you should show in your canadian resume only ups, second in Canada nobody will trust you that you have done more than one trade, no way, if you are a person that has trow out the flies from the park, you can't be also the person that was trowing out the mosquito from the park, it is impossible in Canada to be done both jobs, nobody will trust you and you will not get an interview. I tried at my beginnings to say the truth, I have done this but also I have done that, and I have done some other stuff, No way to get an interview, I modified my resume to show only one trade, waw, my first interview, whe I also had to apply in that company the second trade, I have done it, the guys there where amazed "HOw you know also this?" OH, yes, and I know much more..
Yes, donot say the truth in Canada, you will not be able to get a job.

What are they and what you can expect from them.

First of all are individuals (or companies) that have connections inside sweatshops. Having these connections is not a bad thing, you can be sure your resume will get in front of the person directly interested in hiring you, you can be sure (not always) that your resume will be a little bit more special - will in front of the "line".

I think these are the only pluses for a head hunting companies. OK, I can remember another one: if you are new to job market, or you changed trades, or you are a fresh immigrant, than you can use the head hunting companies to find out if your resume is good, if you have chances on the job market (it is not bad and I would recommend to try this approach).

Now the bad parts of head hunting companies:
- for them the client is the hiring company, you are nothing in front of a head hunter, the head hunter will try to use you or for a job that nobody wants - jobs that are real but you can see them posted for months and months even if it is recession, jobs really bad paid but with requirements equivalent for a space engineer and as I said before, if you fail that interview the HH will not answer your calls or emails for him you are a "failure". To be sincere I consider these kind of head hunters some im*****es, rude individuals with brains the size of a peanut.
- Another way of not being your representative, but the representative of a sweatshop....

I wanted to ask what sites are you using for networking. I know quite a few of them but I am using only two.
One is LinkedIn, some years ago (2006) it was great, now you get more crap and is becoming harder and harder to use it to establish a network with persons that really can help you. But, is still one of the best on the market at this time.
Another one is XING, it is working great for the European market and is very good for growing a network for small and medium business.
I know a few others, but are small and it doesn't make too much sense in using them
If you use other sites, or even if you use the sites that I already mentioned plese thell us what sites are you using and what are the pros and the cons of that sites.

Almost all of you will say, what the heck, why two names for the same thing?
It is not real, in North America when you want to be considered for a job you send a Resume (besides Quebec where the name is CV but the meaning is still Resume). A description of your skills and your projects that are showing your experience and what you can offer to a possible employer.

In Europe you send out a CV (Curriculum Vitae) And this is a short description of your life, not only your professional skills and your projects but also what you have outside the workplace things like: driver license, number of children, age and much more.

That is the reason why I have both of them in the forum title. And also keep in mind if you want to apply for a job in Europe, you should use your CV here. If you apply for jobs in North America you should use your resume here.
These being said...
good luck in finding a job!

First story about some of Canadian head hunters

The Head Hunter, oh mighty and great head hunter, you are our master and our hope when we are looking for a job.
It is a possible way to look at a head hunter when we need a job or when is a recession.
But what we get from the head hunter?
Nothing in return, you will apply for a job that suit you 100% and is in the salary range that you want, the head hunter will send you to a interview at a job that maybe fit you 50% and the salary is lower but he can not put anyone in that position.
He will send you to a already lost cause without respecting you, your feelings and your skills just because he don't want to lose a client.
What will happen if you fail the interview (huge chances if the job is only 50% fit)?
Oh, the almighty head hunter will not speak with you for the next 10 years, even if you can get all the other jobs he has and even the statistics are pointing to the fact that a normal rate of passing interviews is 1 in 5 (you pass one of five).
Or the almighty head hunter will sell you jobs that doesn't have only to harvest resume. You remember the one that is calling you saying: "I have a very good job, yes send me your resume, I will send it tomorrow to the hiring manager" and after that you don't hear shit from that head hunter, I hate this kind.
I will continue this, but, please share your experiences you had this kind of persons.

OK, so you ask yourself why a forum about sweatshops and what the heck is this forum about?

First of all I decided to start this forum because I am full of sweatshop BS and I also wanted to give others a chance to speak freely about the worst sweatshops around the world.

This way, at least you (yes YOU), the one who is reading this right now, will know where NOT to go and YOU will know if it is worth the money and your health and your time to work in some of the sweatshops.

OK I am a middle age Canadian who worked in three countries and in quite a few sweatshops, some that I would recommend some I would not. Some of them were hell on Earth and some of them were great.

What do I want?
To change something ...nah.
To get a better job...maybe.
To help others...sure.
To show what is wrong in some of the job markets ...YES
To point the companies wrongdoing ...YES

The essence of this site:
- speak your mind on what's wrong, about how and why things are not working
- help getting inside a sweatshop
- help getting outside the job market and live happily ever after
- the truth

If you think you have something valuable to say or you think you can change how things works, or you only want to find out where not to go for a job, this this site is for you.

If you're simply a moaner and groaner or a liar, or you like the things they way they are, this site is not for you and please ask for your account to be removed and move on.

Good luck in getting out if the Matrix.
